June 15th is World Day to recognize the issue of elder abuse. In the past year, approximately one-sixth of elderly people over the age of 60 have suffered some form of abuse in the community environment. With the rapid aging of populations in many countries, this trend is expected to continue.

The World Health Organization released guidelines today outlining five key priorities for addressing the issue of elder abuse.

There are various ways to abuse the elderly, such as physical, psychological, or emotional, sexual, and economic abuse. It may also be caused by intentional or unintentional neglect.

In many parts of the world, people still hold back the issue of elder abuse, and most societies in the world underestimate or overlook this issue. However, the accumulating evidence suggests that elder abuse is a major public health and social issue.

Etienne Krug, Director of the Social Determinants of Health at the World Health Organization, stated abusing elderly people is an unfair behavior that can have serious consequences, including premature death, physical injury, depression, cognitive decline, and poverty.

An aging population planet

The global population is aging, as the number of people aged 60 and above will more than double in the coming decades, from 900 million in 2015 to around 2 billion in 2050.

WHO said that, like many other forms of violence, abuse of the elderly increased during the COVID-19 epidemic. In addition, two-thirds of staff in nursing homes and other long-term care institutions admit to committing abusive behavior in the past year.

The agency stated that despite the increasing severity of this problem, the abuse of elderly people is still largely not on the global health agenda.

Combating age discrimination

The new guidelines call for addressing the issue of elder abuse as part of the 2021-2030 Healthy Aging Action Decade, which is consistent with the final decade of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Cracking down on age discrimination is of utmost importance, as it is the main reason why abuse of elderly people receives little attention, and more and better data is needed to raise awareness of this issue.

Countries must also develop and expand cost-effective solutions to prevent abusive behavior and provide "investment reasons" for how the funds to address this issue are worth the money. At the same time, more funds are also needed to address this issue.
