In a nursing home in Omaha, USA, more than ten elderly ladies are sitting in the hallway taking a fitness class, moving their bodies as instructed by the coach.
Four times a week, for about three years.
Even older than them, Coach Bailey is also sitting in a chair, raising his arms to give instructions. The elderly ladies quickly began to rotate their arms, each trying their best as the coach expected.
Bailey teaches a 30-minute fitness class here every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday morning.
According to the Washington Post, Coach Bailey, who is 102 years old, lives independently in the Elkridge retirement home. She teaches fitness classes in the hallway on the third floor four times a week, and has been doing so for about three years, but never thought of stopping.
Bailey, who has lived here for about 14 years, said: "When I grow old, I will retire."
She said that some of the regular participants have arthritis, which limits their movement, but they can comfortably do stretching exercises and benefit from it.
However, Bailey, who also often uses a walking frame, said that she is a strict coach. "They tease me that I am mean because when we exercise, I want them to do it right and use their muscles properly."
Despite her strictness, if they really don't like it, they won't come back. She said: "These girls seem to realize that I am doing something for them, and that is also for myself."
Previously, a man participated in this fitness class, but he passed away. Now it's an all-female class.
The epidemic period led to the residents exercising.
Bailey started this fitness class when the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020 and people were isolated in their own rooms.
At the age of 99, she was older than other residents, but she did not back down.
She said she wanted to stay active and has always been good at motivating others, so she invited her neighbors to move chairs into the hallway and do simple exercises while maintaining social distancing.
As a result, the residents enjoyed the exercise very much, and they have continued to do it ever since.
Bailey teaches this 30-minute fitness class every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday morning, with about 20 stretches for the upper and lower body. This activity has also deepened the friendship among the elderly women, who take care of each other.
Whenever there is a participant's birthday on the day of the fitness class, Bailey bakes cakes to celebrate. She said that at this age, every birthday is a big event.
